Natural Wilderness Hotsprings? Empty Natural Wilderness Hotsprings?

Post by EpicThought Thu Feb 11, 2010 1:00 pm

Does anyone know of any natural hot springs in Arkansas that are located in the "wilds?" I love sitting in natural hot springs on a nice winter backpacking trip. With the town of Hot Springs located here you would think that there would be some somewhere. You guys know of any?

As far as I know the only thermal springs are all around Hot Springs and they are all under lock and key.
No access at all.

Years ago, I was walking the Little Missiouri trail on a cold day from Albert Pike to the Falls. I passed a spring on the river side of the trail that had steam coming out of it. I thought it was a hot spring but I have never seen it since. I was not drinking and I am sure it was not a dream.

Call the Hot Springs NP and pose the same question to those folks.

Another possibility would be to bat the topic around with an area geology professor.

I know where the one is at Caddo Gap, it comes out in the bottom of the river though. Might be able to keep your feet warm this time of year, the rest of your body might not be so comfortable.

We Found It! I was at Little Mo Saturday and using a very inexpensive GPS receiver got close enough that 3 of us spread out and found it. It's a nice little spring, only 74 degrees, but you can definitely tell it's warm. It's about 10 feet off the water in an area where the trail flattens out. The trail is about 60 feet from the water at that point.
We were headed south on the Little Mo Trail about 10-15 miutes south of the crossing at Crooked Creek.
We'll look for it again when we do the ERL in 2 weeks.
