Buckey Trail/Caney Creek Dec. 19 and 20 (work trip)
Just thought I would post this I am still planning on working on the Buckeye Trail on Sat.
Dec. 19th. Right now I am planning on this being a overnight backpack/work trip. I
have been in contact with about 4 to 5 guys. Several that are FoOT members and others
on this forum. It is still open to anyone that would want to come. You don't have to do
the overnight part of the trip. I am leaving it open to each individual as to when they
want to break off and either camp or hike out.
Main purpose of this work trip. Clear up some vague parts of the Buckeye trail that
are hard to follow. This is mainly going to be a brush clearing trip. There is a tree and
limbs down on the Caney trail heading out to the East that I would like to clear on Sun.
if at all possible.
If you haven't contacted me do so in this thread or PM me.
Thanks, Tom

Tom
We won again so I definitely will not be able to come on the weekend. I will spend the day in Wichta Falls. I was really hoping I could work on the trail. I hope you guys have a good time and I appreciate all that you will do. We will be looking forward to your report.

As far as to who all is commited here is as close to a list as I can give you.
Me
Janet
Ed
Brian Stephens (FoOT member from Muskogee, OK)
Chris (Ouachita Explorer, and FoOT member from Waldron, AR)
Bryan (maybe, my son from OK City)
Theodore Zwermann from Texarkana
That is the list as of now. Now the question for everyone is do you want to backpack in, I and Janet are,
or do the loop? The loop is one thing to do if you are in shape and it is another if you have worked
all day! Also I am approaching this work trip to mainly deal with brush. If I am up to it on Sun. I want to
clear as much as I can of a tree that is down on the Caney trail going east.
What do you think ED?

Re: Buckey Trail/Caney Creek Dec. 19 and 20 (work trip)
Tom, that sounds like a great plan. I am going to start at the east caney trailhead, hike up to the buckeye trailhead and do the loop from there. My goal is to work on the buckeye where it gets hard to follow. If you want you can meet me at katy falls. I will not know if I am going to stay the night until I get there. All of this is provided that I get my project completed and that is looking pretty good.

Ed,
Just thought about your post. I, and the group, will start from the Buckeye trail head and follow the Buckeye
trail down to the Caney Trail. I think that is what you are also saying. We are just planning on making it a
overnighter.
Edit: Looks like we will only be doing the loop in one day.

I notified the fS that we would be working Sat. and they told me that there was a chance
for some snow! That would be neat! By the way high is predicted to be 45 and possibly
brezzy...

Re: Buckey Trail/Caney Creek Dec. 19 and 20 (work trip)
Updated list:
Me
Janet (maybe, might work a little and double back to the truck)
Ed
Brian Stephens (FoOT member from Muskogee, OK)
Chris (Ouachita Explorer, and FoOT member from Waldron, AR)
Bryan (maybe, my son from OK City) Can't come, boss needs him!
Ted Zwermann from Texarkana haven't heard from him, Ed did you ever
get in touch with him?
Edit: I checked back and I have a email from him on 11/29 that he would meet us at the trail head.
I would like to say that I couldn't do all of this myself and I do appreciate
all of the help you guys give to keep these trails up and in good shape!
Going to be a long and very fruitful day I feel!

Clif,
You are welcome anytime you want to come down! Maybe we can schedule a hike in the Wilderness, no work at all. I would love to show it to you! We need to meet up some time...

Re: Buckey Trail/Caney Creek Dec. 19 and 20 (work trip)
I will say this about arranging work parties to go into Caney Creek, It is a lot easier for me to
just grab my pack, saw and loppers and just go and work than to try to get folks from a far
to get together for a weekend of work! In fact I have already been in twice, lopped many
miles of trail and with Janet's help cut out one large tree! But this is to much for any one
person. I do appreciate any one that drives from across the state or two states to help
out!
Believe it or not getting together and working for a day with a bunch of highly motivated
guys/gals is fun!

Clif,
One of these days we will get together. I know the situation of when you want to do something
but everything seems to get in the way!

Re: Buckey Trail/Caney Creek Dec. 19 and 20 (work trip)
Possible alternate plan:
If it is just to frigid in the morning, and probably will be, I say lets start at the E. trail head and
clear one tree and some limbs of the Caney trail. also need to do some trail work were a root
ball pulled up a section of the trail and also cut out a section of a large pine. I have a axe,
shovel (2), a hoe/rake tool, and two saws, plus a one man crosscut saw. Also the trail reroute
section still needs to have brush work done.
Ed, what do you think?
