Planning an overnight to 3 Day trip, need advice/opinions!
Hello everyone, I have been a lurker for a long time and I have to say... I love these forums. A family member and I got into backpacking/hiking over a year ago and are trying to go on 2-4 multi-day backpacking trips each year. Over the last year we have hiked just about all of the Buffalo River Trail with the exception of Kyle's Landing to Pruitt. That is the only section we have left. We are planning an overnight hike (possibly 2 nights) the last weekend in may and are trying to decide whether to hike that section to complete the trail, or check out something new in the state. So... I am looking for suggestions from you pros out there. Knowing that all we have really seen is the BRT, what would you recommend for this trip?
Thanks for your feedback!!

Are you traveling from a certain direction that distance would be a factor?

Eagle Rock Loop down kind of near Hot Springs, Butterfeild above Ft. Smith, or section hike some of the OHT or OT.

If you could give us some more information like how many miles you want to cover each day, how much up and down hiking you want to do, etc. This would help out a great deal.
I second the Eagle Rock Loop in the Ouachitas. It's a great 3-day hike. Also, sections 2 & 3 of the Ozark Highland Trail will take you through some spectacular country.

Thanks for the replies. We are probably looking to cover 8-10 miles a day. It has not been determined if it will be 2 Days 1 Night or 3 Days 2 nights yet. It depends on whether or not I can get off on Monday. I will check some of these suggestions out. Keep them coming!

With those kind of miles, you could easily do the Eagle Rock loop in 3 days. To do it in 2 days is pretty tough.

If we are able to do the 3 day hike, I may consider it over the OHT. However, I have been looking at OuachitaMaps.com and trying to decide the best section to do if we only have 2 days to hike. Any suggestions?

You could do part of Sec. 6 of the OHT. You could start at Haw Creek Falls Campground (in Sec. 5) and hike into Hurricane Creek Wilderness. There is two trails, at one point it splits, the main trail goes into Hurricane creek. Cross the creek see the sights cross the creek again and a little ways you can take the high water trail back towards Haw Creek Falls. Could be made a loop like that. I did it back in 2005. Check out pics here.
This is a beautiful area, I don't know how the ice storm affected it though.
Just a thought.

By the way welcome to the group!
