Does anyone have any experience sealing tents with something other than Sil Net sealer? I have this but don't know if this will work. I'm sure I'll have to dilute, if it will work. Thoughts?

Kyle,

I assume you are talking about sealing the seams. I have used the McNett Sil Net in the past and had good results. I have thinned 100% silicoln like you linked to with mineral spirits and sealed an old tent I had. I smelled like mineral spirits from then on but did not leak. If you are sealing a new tent I would call the mfg. to get recomendations so I did not void a warranty.

IT's A TENT... if you put a gold coat on a bugger its still a bugger... I mean its not like a tarp... you got one way to set the sucker up and thats IT... at least you got a Tarp Tent I guess. Kind of like buying a Chevyford car I guess.. hahahaha. Just Teasing Kyle. 100% silicon cut with spirts then dusted with baby powder once its set usually is the best way to go and it sticks to just about anything.

Just follow Henry Shires instructions and you will be fine.. I used his homemade recipe and just slopped it on and it works great. I also put some on the floor of my Contrail and it helps with the slipping of your sleeping pad.

Hope this helps.

Lew.. good idea about the pad.... just had a idea of putting it on the pad itself for use in my hammock... hmmmm maybe use it for both sides... interesting idea.

regardless though you will want to dust it lightly with baby powder on the outside of the tent as that stuff will have leafs, sticks, grass and even itself sticking to it...

I always mix mine with coleman fuel instead of mineral spirits, it evaporates faster, and doesn't have the smell. If you slop it on too thick, I am another vote for the baby powder.

So why this concoction? Is it mo gooder than the store bought sealer? Cheaper? I got a tent I need to do.Or sell them... or both.

Clif,
I just had this silicone sealer at the house. That is the reason for the question. Not better, just easier for my situation.

In my opinon... and we all know what they are good for Wink, I find that I don't have to re seal the blasted thing anytime soon with the DIY stuff. The store bought stuff I find that after a few years I have to re seal. But the DIY stuff is usually thicker coat and as such results in a heaver load. While min. but hevier non the less. Thats the trade off.
