Ray Jardine's New Book!
For those of you who wanted to buy Ray Jardine's Practical Backpacking and missed it before it went out of print, Ray has written a new book, Trail Life. It's basically a re-write of PB without the philosophical stuff, added a chapter written by his wife, and added some color pictures.
You can find it on his website: http://www.rayjardine.com/ray-way/Trail-Life/index.htm

Re: Ray Jardine's New Book!
I've been hearing that this book is a little outdated now, and that it needed to be updated. Does anyone know if there is any truth to this statement? It is true that a lot has changed since Ray wrote his first book.
Re: Ray Jardine's New Book!
Trail Life is apparently a new book, but Ray does take a lot out of his book, Practical Backpacking, and uses it in this one. Another way to look at it is that Trail Life is the 5th Edition of Practical Backpacking. Some of the information may be dated, but for those wanting to reduce their pack weight, they may find some useful information.

Re: Ray Jardine's New Book!
OK, so I can't pass up a backpacking book, even if its a re-hash of another book. I got my copy of Trail Life today and have had an opportunity to look through it pretty close. It does have a lot of the same material that Ray's older book, Practical Backpacking, has. Basically, Ray took the majority of PB and added color photos and a chapter devoted primarily to women backpackers written by his wife, Jenny. The photos are great in color, although he uses a lot of the same photos that he used in PB, which were in black and white.
This book is grat for someone who missed out on getting a copy of PB while it was available. If you happen to have a copy of PB and are considering buying Trail Life, then, just be forewarned that most of the material is the same.

Dated or not, it still has to be fun, good reading specificaly for a newby. Tom lent me an old book "The Complete Walker 3" by Colin Fletcher. Most of it was outdated but it still was very, very enjoyable reading, considering it was tuesday and I couldn't be on the trail anyway. I'm gonna order mine soon.
