You're right...Just make sure they're Gore-Tex!
Re: New Hiker
I need a trail name for him. He is Nathaniel Grant. I was calling him Cletus the Fetus but momma trumped that. :-)
I am starting him out today. We are going for a drive thru the mountains. We will go up hwy 23, follow the Mulberry, go across a dirt road to hwy 16, and then go to Boxley and follow the river to Jasper. It will be good to get out.
I have a Kelty Kangaroo pack for him. When he gets a month or two on him we are going hiking. Short day hikes of course.

Re: New Hiker
Do you know if Leki makes any 12-inch tall hiking poles? He'll probably need some.
Glad you're starting him out right Hillbilly. And I'm glad you're having fun doing it.

Re: New Hiker
The smallest poles that I know that LEKI makes are their youth poles, and they extend to 115cm. Fully collapsed they are about 24", it gives him time to grow. The good thing is that they are only $25 very cheap for Leki.

Re: New Hiker
The little man travels well. As soon as we hit the road he started studying the back of his eyelids. Nice drive. The elk were out at Ponca and bugleing away around dusk.
I tried to find him a Goretex onesy. Not available that I could find.
We traveled up 23 to 215, and followed the Mulberry. We stopped at Wolfpen for a nice walk, feeding and changing. The adults stopped at Oark store for a feeding ourselves...no changing. If you have not been there the food is great and the place has ambiance. We cut over the mountain on a county road to HWY 16. From there we went to Boxley, Ponca, and to Jasper. A visit to a friend in Pruitt to show off the young man and then home. Hwy 7 is opened back up after the slide finally.

Sounds like a great drive, I am glad to hear about the elk being out. I am supposed to camp at Ponca tomorrow night. If I find some gortex onsies I will let you know
