Summer Get together?

Are you a ham radio operator? I am but am inactive at the moment.. Field day is
were all of the hams get together all over the country to try to use emergancy
power or to use basic field type set ups to make contacts over a 24 hour period
of time. Has been along time since I did that. I was pretty much a digital person,
such as RTTY..

Mark me down for at least one. Will know about my wife in a day or so.

Hey David Holthus.. are you a go.. I remember you saying before that you could make it but I am trying to get a name list together now. Just to make sure I have enough food. If you can make it will it be just you or bringing a date? er yea... lol

Also guys I am taking care of the food but we need to make sure that we have drinks taken care of, and anything else. I know Colt said a couple of gallons of tea, but I guess we should also start a list of who is bringing what...

Just out of curiosity, will you guys be discussing a group hike or maybe paddle during the get together. I know we have brought it up before and also know most of you don't hike in the warmer months(do you realize that is like half the year down here, how do you stay away so long, I would rather sweat than not be doing my passion personally). I hope that if it happens I will not miss that one too. I have a big Colorado trip planned for September so that month would be a no go probably for me, but I will be on cloud 9 after summiting three 13,000 footers and staying at beautiful alpine lakes 10,000 feet up. I hope sometime I will get to meet you guys in person.

If a group hike or canoe trip comes up, we'll make sure to post it so everyone has a chance to plan for it. We will try to keep everyone's schedules in mind when and if we plan something.
As far as backpacking in the summer, usually just June, July, and August are the months that most of us avoid. I've done some summer trips, but I much prefer highs in the 40's.

I for one would not mind a group trip.. though I am almost 80% solo. I usually stay off the trails for any extended hikes for most of June, July, Aug., Sept., and around here most of Oct. is ifffy. If I am not comfortable then I am not enjoying it. If I am not enyoying it then I am not going to go just to simply be there. I don't like the heat and I don't like the bugs. If it means I have to stay away for a while.. then ok.. I will wait till most of the crouds have gone home and the trails are more open. I love Dec.- March as I have hiked a few days without seeing Anyone. My fav. time of the year. lol

I guess I am the only die hard on the board. Whether the sweat is dripping in my eye, or the cold is nipping at my nose, hands and toes, I simply cannot stay away from what I enjoy the most. I remember times on the northern part of the A.T. where it was 90+ degrees and 90% humidity and you had a few 4000+ footers to climb, it was a struggle the whole day but at the end you looked back and the struggle made it more enjoyable. I have adapted to hiking in all extremes and have come to enjoy it in heat rain and cold. I have always been that kind of person when it comes to my passions. If it was a windy freezing day on the mountain, and everybody else would be in the ski lodge, I would be out there skiing or snowboarding with a big old smile on my face because it is what I enjoy, not just in ideal conditions but in all conditions. It is all just a sate of mind to me. And my mind tells me I enjoy what I love wherever and whenever. It is because of this that I have excelled in what I do. I have competed on a professional level in skiing and snowboarding, and have had the endurance and motivation to hike longer distances than many in all conditions, and it is only because my willingness and love to be out there whenever I can.

Yea.. well you can keep the heat. I will take all else. The rain, snow sleet, wind and cold. But you can have the heat and the bugs that goes with it. While I do love the outdoors and do try to get out when I can, I do have a job that must come first and in a economy such as what we have I feel damn lucky to have the job that I have, even if it may keep me from the trail. As far as the boarding and sking, and even the floating and paddleing, you can keep that stuff too. I understand the passion about it and wish you and all the people good luck who do enjoy it, but its not for me. As far as being the only diehard on the board... maybe.

How did work come in the picture, I take care of three children and work 5-6 days a week. Work just as hard as anybody I know. You don't know the meaning of bugs either until you spend a early summer up in Maine. It makes the bug season down here almost non existing. The first summer I lived down here I really didn't think there was any mosquitos, I think I got bit maybe twice. Lots of red wasps and spiders though, but hey, I am bigger than them. I don't get out nearly as much as I like anymore due to work and children but that will all change in time.

That's because there's not any mosquitoes in NW AR. They are too busy in E AR multiplying by the millions in stagnant flooded rice and bean water.

That's funny, black flies are the Maine attreaction up in the northeast, do they have those down here, not sure. Up there they come by the swarm, sometimes there are so many it makes the day look darker. Forget fishing in the spring up there unless your wearing full body armor. People actually hike with a net over they're face. I am one of those rare types they tend to not go after though, I guess they don't like my blood.
