Buffalo River Trail
The Buffalo River Trail and the other trails in the area from Ponca to Pruitt are some of my favorites in the State. Lots of options for one-way or loop hikes (loops are handy if you're a solo hiker).

Re: Buffalo River Trail
Hey Owl, welcome to the site!
Thanks for the input. I'm actually going to be off work here pretty soon (um, not by choice) so I'm on the lookout for the best trails around since I'll have time to hike them soon!

I agree, the Buffalo River Trail and its surrounding areas has more variety and more scenic vistas than anywhere I have seen here to. I hope to be able to take a week and hike the length of the river trail. Does anybody know if the end to end trail is completed, I know they were working on it.

Owl:
Great to see you took up the invitation. Glad to have you. Looking forward to some lively conversations.
Snow:
The official trail has not been completed from end to end. I do know one guy that has done the whole river on horseback, and I'm sure there is someone out there who has hiked the whole river, but no official full-length end to end trail yet.

There is a book by Ken Smith that describes the entire Buffalo River and chronicles the features in great detail from a canoeing point of view. I usually load up the canoe with hiking and camping gear and hike from the river up to the different features and camp on the gravel bars. I have often wondered why the call them "Bars" I've never seen a waiter or waitress on one. I always have to get up and get my beer myself.

That is the best thing about paddling, having the room and capability to carry frosty beverages. Much harder to do in a backpack. I will check that book out, thanx.
