What sleeping bag?

Since we got a good response to the backpacking question, I thought I'd find out what kind of sleeping bag do you use. I use a Montbell Alpine #1 Down (15 deg.) bag in the winter and a Marmot Atom (40 deg) down bag in the fall and spring.
Let us know what you guys use.

I use a 5oz Climashield XP top quilt that is 42"X72", and has a foot box sewed in the bottom. It is rated to 20* and weighs a pound. I do wish that it would compress more, but this is what I am stuck with until Amanda makes me a down quilt, and it is not likely that will happen until my current model breaks down , oh well accidents happen . I also have one without a foot box that I use when its really cold as an underquilt for my hammock, again, would love to replace this with down. All together I am good and not much weight, just a little bulk.

By the way, my wife, Amanda, made both quilts for me . She pretty much makes all my gear .

Montbell SS#1 (15 deg.) winter bag. An OLD Kelty 35 degree that has lost most of its loft for summer, and a wide array of fleece blankets, sheets and other assortment of DIY. Going to look into making some silk top sheets and ect. as fleece is pretty bulky.

I have heard great things about the montbell bags, especially the superstretch ones. I was looking at the #1 15degree bag, but for the money think i may be better served getting a lighter shelter and possibly a few items for water purification or cooking.

As far as sleeping bags this is what I am using at the present:

35 degree Big Agness Horse Theif bag (no bottom insulation):14 Oz.
0 degree Campmor bag: 3 lb 8 oz

I would like to go lighter on a winter bag but at the moment additonal
purchases are out of the question!

I have a Western Mountaineering Highlite (35 deg) I use this pretty much all year long. I can sleep in it down to about 30 deg and use it like a quilt in the summer. If it is really hot I take a Marmot trails "summer bag". If it is below I use the trails as a liner in my WM bag and this usually gets me down somewhere in the low 20s. If its colder than that I use hand warmers in the bag for added heat output, or I stay home ! The bags weigh 17 oz for the Highlite (its the long version) and 19 oz for the Marmot Trails (its synthetic).

Maybe I'll be able to get a Montbell bag before next season, so I can be part of the club!

I looked at down but it is high maintenence.

I know it may seem like it is, but down isn't really hard to maintain. You just store it loose (under your bed or in the big cotton storage bag it comes with) and don't get it wet. Cleaning is a little rough, but I've only done that once. The biggest drawback to down is the price. You just have to save a little longer.

Getting it wet is my concern, had too many wet trips up river.
Down just doesn't fit my needs.

What kind of 3-season bag do you have? If you're looking to replace a 3-season bag, you may want to look at a 25-35 degree bag. Might save you some bucks.

I have a eureka cimarron 15deg synthetic bag that weighs over 4lbs. its not bad and will probablly keep for awhile but wanted to get s nicer down bag that would be comfortable in cooler conditions (25-30degs) and be able to put clothes on as needed. what do yall suggest for lightweight warmer weather hiking, perphaps in the summer?

OMSC Synthetic Synthetic Synthetic for the warmer weather... I usually just get something off the rack of Sportsman Warhouse or someplace. Nice Kelty or even the SlumberJack is not bad for the warmer weather. I just use a fleece throw or a fleece bag liner with a footbox. But I will be in a hammock so I don't think to much of these things lol.

I can see why you want a different cold weather bag. For summer weather, I agree with TM (getting to be too much of a habit these days ) that a cheaper synthetic bag would be ample. Especially if you're looking for a bag for nights that only get down into the 60s or 70s. Fleece is warm, but may not compress well.

Correct on the compresion UL. and the reason I recomend a syn. bag for summer is that it is inhearently more mosture then. Both in way of humitity and in presperation. This equals a syn. bag. And we going to have to work on this agree ing UL... hahaha

I am actually hoping to make it up to sportsmans warehouse tomorrow, i want to try on a bunch of trail shoes and see some of there packs, tarps and sleeping bags. Probablly wont buy anything but seeing things in person sure is better than gandering at it on the internet!

Well good luck on the packs... lol. They don't have a single pack that I like. WAAAAYYY to heavy. Shoes.....let me know what you like cause I have seen nothing there either. Tarps.. they got a fairly nice 5x7 and a 8x10 both thats not a bad price. Bags.... I like some of the Keltys but they are a bit heavy. I like some of the SlumberJacks for warmer weather but I have had one for the colder weather and I hated that thing. If your up at the Southaven one stop by the gift bar and tell my buddies Scott and Fuzzy that you know me... wont get you anything other than maybe a weird look and some great conversation. Now knives... Scott knows his biz on the knifes.

Ive been looking at the SOG seal pup for a loight fixed blade knife. a knife is something i have to have out there, and id like it to perform mulit-uses and be VERY durable. currently i carry a kabar usmc short fighting knife, a bit heavy but bulletproof.

I am a huge fan of the Cold Steel Canadian Belt Knife. Good size and a great feel and ask anyone that hikes with me, weights next to nothing lol. The shape makes it one of the most useful knifes I have ever used. and at $15 its a frigging DEAL. lol

That knife does look like a good deal, and a quality blade.

If this is the knife you're talking about, its only $11 here. May be worth buying just to have. Now back to bags...Does anyone have a source for silk. I think I might make like to make a liner for my summer bag to extend it down somewhere in the low 50s.

Haha, at least it qualifies as high visibility, and has no chance of getting lost. I forgot about Hancock Fabrics. There is one of those in Conway. Maybe I'll go there today after I get off of work.

Lemme know whut ya find. I been shopping since I started the thread about liners. I need enuff for 2 1/2 or 3 bags. 4 year old isn't as long as the rest of us.
