From stoves to hammocks and most things in between, I have made many of peices of gear (yes, unfoutunately, this means I know how to sew). I think the thing that I'm most proud of is the backpack that I made. It started as a regular stuff sack, and it evolved form there. It has two side water bottle pockets (but I don't carry water bottles, go figure), a front pocket for essentials, a hydration bladder pocket in side the pack, a removeable sit pad/back padding (or pack frame sheet, whatever), and padded shoulder straps. It also has a drawstring closure like a normal stuff sack does. There are other things I'm still working on like a 8'x10' tarp for hammock camping, but the backpack is definately my favorite. So, with all that, what is your favorite peice of gear that you have made, or what is something that you would like to make?

I'll take the silence as saying no one else gets as excited about this as I do. Oh well.

Wilkey,

Well the only thing that the wife and I have done is a undercover for our Hennesey Hammock. We used a older tents rainfly. Worked pretty good. Were we are now, living in a camper, we don't have room for a sewing machine. Just recently we bought a MaCat delux hammock tarp for the wifes HH. I will eventualy convert the original rainfly into a undercover. There is a pretty simple plan on the web for that.

I think you're talking about an underquilt? If so, how did you do it? I have to make one soon for a hammock I just finished, and have been looking for new ideas on how to make one quick and easy.

Wilky,

No not an underquilt, although I wish I had one, Hennessey calls it a undercover. As in part of their supershelter. We did it by trial and error. We had the hammock up in the back yard and got the old rain fly up under it, made markings. Had to allow for the expansion of the material. In any case it has been awhile, about two years, since we made them. It blunted the wind well, can put insulation between it and the hammock. If you are interested in DIY for hammocks try this site:
http://www.tothewoods.net/HammockGroundWeights.html

Also try the Hammock forums site:
http://www.hammockforums.net/

Either of the above sites should have underquilt info.

Hope this helps,

I have made lots of things from the odd and unusual to the mundane and some things that would be cheaper to just buy. I just like to jack with stuff and see what I can make of it. Course most never works lol. Right now just playing with some pop can stoves and seeing what I can do. Working on one with a simmer device, and built in wind screen. Also, this one will burn damn near anything you put in it. Turn it one way for wood, then move it around a bit and will do fuel tabs, then a bit more and it will do alcohol. I have seen variations on all these but never seen one that does them all. Just a pet project of mine :-D. Something to fool around with. Oh and knives. I like to tinker around with making my own knives.

Eddie,
I'm jealous of you for being able to make knives. That is something that I got ready to try once, and then realized that I had to make a forge, and that was a project that just disheartened me to much to go on because I didn't have anything that could provide enough oxygen to achieve that kind of heat intensity. I would also love to see some pics of your multi fuel stove. That sounds awesome since it is made out of pop cans. I would like to see how your using twigs effectively with such a small space and thin metal. I didn't think soda can walls would hold up to such intense heat. I am very intrigued!

lol.... yea well only parts of it will be from pop cans... lol... far as a forge.. I don't have one. I usually try to find old scrap that I know is of ultra high carbon and remake it. Right now I have a 8in cleaver that is 3/8's thick. Very hard to find one that size. Its not in good enough condition to be a collector’s item but I can barely scratch it with a file so I know its at lest Rockwell 56. I just take the temper out of it so I can work it down then retemper it. Easy enough to do that in the oven. lol. The real trick is if I decide to do what they call directional tempering where you have hard edge but soft spine. Helps to keep from shattering a blade if you have it to hard. some of my fav blades only have one side sharp and look kind of weird, they are something else. They are of Japanese design. Don't know what I will make of this cleaver just yet though. Have a few rough cardboard cutouts I am playing with. I just bought a new Puma Rattler though cause I wanted the design of the blade. May try to remake it but with a few upgrades lol.

ouachita,
Jeff does have a ton of info on his page. I'll have to check this out. I've learned a lot about hammock camping and backpacking in general from those guys.
