Cheaper Supply of Freeze Dried Foods

After the last group hike and seeing Tenn's Mountain House freeze dried chicken breast, I thought that I would look around and see if I could find different freeze dried foods for backpacking besides Mountain House. That chicken weighed nothing, and it smelled really good while I was eating my ramen noodles . While I was searching I found this site here. Amanda found some freeze dried apple squares and banana and strawberries in the baby section of Wal-Mart that I thought would be good added to oatmeal too. I thought about buying a #10 can of the Beef Stroganoff, and then when I finally finish that off, trying another one. I know some of yall like the Mountain House Lasagna, and you can buy a #10 can of it there too.

My only concern would be how long the unused portion would keep? Its freeze dried, so as long as you keep it dry it should be fine right? Oh well, yall let me know, and maybe we could do a group by thing and get together to divvy it up

You could divide it up into ziplocks and place in a freezer, providing you have room, till used. When I dehydrate food that is what I do. Should keep well.

Have you considered dehydrating your food? You can dehydrate just about anything you would eat at home. Would take lots of experimenting but that's no problem for a guy that likes to eat!

I have used Packit Gourmet and won't say they are cheaper than anyone else, but they do offer some items that I enjoy (chicken squares, mixed sweet peppers, grated cheese). I add these to Ramen, Couscous, and instant potatoes. I double bag the mix in a quart ziplock and add boiling water.

I'll also admit that I am a little partial to this company since they are located in Austin, Tx.

Thanks for the other links guys, they really help. It looks like I may get to spend more time on the trail this year as my boys get older, so it may be easier for us guys to eat better . It may not even take us long to eat through one of those #10 cans either
