This is awesome. I really like this kind of stuff. Who wrote it? I saw that spur on the Buckeye Trail and wondered where it might go. That makes an awesome loop.

Re: !!!!!
Maybe this is another new thread but a guy told me there is the remains of an old mining community and a blocked off mine on top of a mountian on a side road between Albert Pike and LIttle Missiouri Falls.

That is so exciting! We should have a group hike to check it out. Can't let Tom have all the fun.

Re: !!!!!
By the way the W. entry into the Caney Creek Trail didn't originally start were it does now. I think that
it started some were around the bridge that is mentioned in the article and you walked a path to were
you ford the Tot.

In fact I have toyed with the idea of a group hike in the Caney Creek Wilderness and it doesn't have to be on trail.
Sounds great,,, my only problem is the next 2 weekends are booked for me. If you all do a trip on Apr 17th or later, then I'm in.

Re: !!!!!
Tom,
Ed and Mark and I climbed a hill just south of where we were camped last year during trail maintenance near the 1st crossing of Caney Creek near the west end. That would be a very easy way in to Short Creek. It was only about a 10 minute climb and we were looking right down into the drainage.

Re: !!!!!
Mark,
How about entering the Short Creek valley via the Buckeye Trail. Camp out along the creek cross over the Hanna Range in the place you mentioned and hike out on the Caney Creek Trail. Looking at April 24th (Sat.) and Sun. the 25th coming out. If water is high we will look at a alternate date. Or if that is to much we can cross over the Tot to a staged car/truck.
Would like to mention that it would be hard for me to do it sooner due to I need to do some trail work on the Buckeye and while I am up there I will be figuring the best place to go down the mountain.

Re: !!!!!
This just in from Sharon Hose at the Mena FS office:
I talked to Tom Breashears (former backcountry ranger) about Short
Creek Trail. He said that there was a burn in there a few years ago
that would have helped define the trail since they used that way in.
You can park at a camp site on the Cossatot and then will have to cross some
private, but he doesn't think that it is posted. He said now is the
time to go since it will be harder to follow when growth starts.
This does sound even better doesn't guys! I am pretty firm that Janet and I will scout it out
this weekend.

I'm in like Flint.
How you been, Ed?
That might be a long hike on Sunday, tho. Let's keep thinking about it. Should we start a group hike thread like I did for ERL?

Yes it would be, I am open to other options. We could hike in as the article says and back the same way to the West. Or
stage a truck to the West and come in from the Buckeye. What you guys think...

I would like too see the campsite on the cossatot but I will do any combination that you like. I have been up on my mountaun simulator so I am up for the miles.
Mark, it has been going great. I just haven't been out on the trail enough.
