Buckeye Trail Trip Report
My two grand children and myself arrived at the shelters beside Bard Springs Friday evening(2/26/10) at about 5pm. We were shocked to find the ground covered with snow. We put our tent in one of the shelters and slept well. We were up early Sat. AM and packing. The kids do not have a lot of experience so it takes us a while to get moving.
We arrived at the Buckeye Trail Head at about 9. It was a beautiful morning. The trail was covered with snow but we were warm and the sun was bright. We toke our time and enjoyed the view. As the morning wore on we were only seeing snow on the north slopes. The down hill hike was a real kicker for me and the kids. I guess we are out of shape.
We arrived at the falls about 3:20. I had a new quilt I made using the advise of Preacherman and we slept warm in our tent. It was 25 degrees at 7AM Sunday Morning. We camped up the creek from the falls and headed up the Caney Trail on Sunday morning. We finished about 4PM. No speed records were set, but we sure looked at ever mushroom and rock in that part of the wilderness.
It was the first time I had ever went backpacking in the snow and the first trip for my 12 year old granddaughter. I guess it was a success, she plans to do the entire Ouachita Trail at some time in her life.

That is such a great trail and don't the kids give it a new perspective? Got any pics?

I have always said that this is one of the great trails in the state! Great views for sure!
Also I can't think of a better place to take kids on their first over night backpack trip!

Someone needs to start a thread on how to post pics. I don't know how.

First thing that you have to do is have a host for your pics. Mine is webshots. Then go to
the icon that looks like a picture. Run your curser over it and it should say image insert.
You will have to go to your host, highlight the link and put it in the space provide when
you click on the image insert icon. Play with that and if you have problems send me a PM.

Re: Buckeye Trail Trip Report
I finally drove down FR106 to park my truck for the ERL. Now I know where the Buckeye and Caney Creek Trailheads are

Dwight,
How was the road to the trailheads? A couple of weeks ago, when we went to the Primative tools workshop, it was in very bad shape.
In one spot we had to go to 4-wheel drive.

Re: Buckeye Trail Trip Report
There was one little muddy part going to the trail that wasn't too bad. My truck is just a 2x4 and it made it fine, it really wasn't that bad. I have driven country gravel roads all my life, and 106 was just like most of them growing up. I could imagine how it would be after a good rain though.

Dwight,
I think that part of the Ouachita's had a lot of snow and rain this winter. I suppose that the road has just broken down in sections.
Since I have been going into that section of the state it is by far the worse ever. Of course we have had a bit of dry weather
lately that I am sure has helped.
