Pitchin Tarp over Tent
Hey Everybody, I just ordered an REI Bug Hut Pro 2 http://www.rei.com/product/777772
As we all know, insects are starting to get bad out there, and with all this rain they will be awful this summer. I bought this tent so I can get a nice breeze at night (and a good view of the stars), without having to get ate up by bugs. My question is how is the best way to pitch a tarp if it decides to rain? And what material? I don't use trekking poles, so I will have to use two trees as my tie-offs.
I don't know if they make a fly for this, but I wouldn't want to use one b/c then I won't have a breeze, (the main reason for this tent).
Any ideas for a good rain shelter? And if it's serious rain I will take one of my other tents. I'm trying to protect against light rain/light wind.
Thanks for any feedback

An A-frame pitch (tarp strung between 2 trees) works pretty good in a light rain. You could pitch it lower on the trees if it started raining harder. You can also pitch the tarp on the ground, using a small branch or other 3-4 ft stick that you find lying around. Staking 2 or 3 sides down to the ground can provide very good rain protection, even in downpours. Use the stick to prop up the free side and guy it out. Size of the tarp will determine the extent of coverage.

If I do an A Frame, should I guy out the corners to other trees? Or stake em to the ground? I'm afraid if I stake to the ground, or use a stick instead of A Frame, then the tarp will end up rubbing against the sides of the tent...

Hi mss... don't know but that looks to much like the Big Agnes 2 man... a nice tent but still a tent. It comes with the rain fly, and can be set up without it. But a FYI for you.. unless your actually going to put a second person in there with you... you may be better off with a hammok with a bug net. Such as the Hammock Bliss... just a thought then you can be off the ground, less bugs, and a swing in your sleep lol. Good luck and I second what UL said about the A Frame. Not a lot of options when using one like that.

Re: Pitchin Tarp over Tent
My wife and I, so I'll need a tent. But I have been thinking of a hammock after reading some posts on here, but I dunno, might have to try if before I by it. I tend to waller in my sleep, don't know if the hammock will accomodate my sleeping habits. Also, I got 15% off using my REI discount, so it came out to a pretty good price, and REI makes some good quality stuff.

If you're going to pitch the tarp over the bug tent, then I would string the tarp about 2-3 feet above the tent. Stake out the corners of the tarp far from the tent. This will make for a shallower angle of the tarp sides and should make it so that the tarp doesn't touch the tent. You could also use 4 sticks, about 3 ft. tall, place them about three ft from the corners of the tarp, and tie the corners of the tarp to these sticks, and then stake your guylines out from these sticks. This would assure that the tarp doesn't contact your tent.

BTW, an 8x10 tarp would probably be the best size for your application. Campmor sells an 8x10 silnylon tarp for around $70.00 and weighs just over 14 oz.

Its been my experiance and I think most people on here that use the hammocks that you do not toss and turn as much. Its one great big pressure point from head t foot. And you can always use 2 hahahaha

I never toss in my hammock, but my boy does. He loves his hammock, and really enjoys sleeping in it, of course he is 5 Come to a campout, and I will let you try out a few different hammocks.
