Hello from Spa City Empty Hello from Spa City

Post by mss_09 Sun Apr 26, 2009 6:35 pm

Hey Everyone, stumbled across your website and looks like my kind of crowd!! I live here in Hot Springs and spend alot of time out by Lake Ouachita. Can't wait to spend countless hours wasting, err.... browsing here and getting some valuable information.

I love backpacking, but every once in a while I enjoy some good ole "car camping" where I can load up my cooler with lots of beverages, brats, and the utmost luxury, sweet tea.

Anyone have a suggestion for a nice SECLUDED car camping spot. I do not want to go to a campground with other campers 50 feet away. I am looking at the Ouacita River, maybe River Bluff Campground or Dragover. Anyone camped here? Any advice?

Thanks and look forward to reading some posts

Welcome to the Forum, and there are some areas in National Forest that may fit your bill, just be prepared to bring all your water and whatever you need for um err "toiletries" Wink Sometimes you can find spots not to far from the road. You can also ask at the ranger station or camp host to see where the best place may be.

Scott,

Welcome to the forum! Good car camping spots... A good book that will help you with that is called "The Best In Tent Camping The Ozarks" by Steve Henry. He gives detailed info on secluded car camping areas in AR and southern MO.

Welcome

Awesome car sites on any of the FS roads that leave out of Albert Pike. Reasonable priced at free and you are welcome to use the showers and toilets at Albert Pike.

Hello from Spa City Empty Dragover, River Bluff

Post by ar.hiker Mon Apr 27, 2009 12:27 pm

I'm very familiar with Dragover and River Bluff. Dragover is always busy during the floating season, especially on the weekends. River Bluff has not been maintained very well over the last few years, but is not used much.

The float on the Dragover Loop, as us locals call it, is pretty fun. Some Class II if the water level is right. It's a 3 mile float, but you can walk back to your car in about 10 minutes. No need for two shuttle vehicles. I go over there at least ten times a year just to keep my paddling skills honed a little.

As someone else mentioned there are a bunch of undeveloped sites between Little Missouri Falls and Albert Pike. They are pretty popular with folks from Texas and Louisiana though, so now through the end of vacation season it's not always easy to find a good spot on the weekends. Good hiking in that area too.

Welcome to the site! I haven't been around much lately (I'm busy getting in the best shape I've been in for years--more on that later...)

I can tell you that most of the camping areas along the Womble Trail are relatively unused much of the time and several of them overlook the River. Pretty secluded out there, but you are likely to see some mountain bikes passing through this time of year.

Anyway, again, Welcome!
