Re: Snakes Are Out!!
I was out at Lake catherine state park visiting the waterfall. I decided to follow the stream that forms the waterfall for a little while, and soon had to start bushwacking. After 30 mins, I stood, tired and sweaty and picking ticks off me, when a nice fat copperhead slithered between me and my buddy. We hightailed it out of there and back to the well worn path....

Re: Snakes Are Out!!
I just got back from my parents lake house on Grand Lake. Yesterday my girls found two ring neck snakes. They kept the larger one (about 6" and less than pencil thickness). They were going back with my parents and when they stopped for dinner it got out of the container and is loose in my dad's suv!
I stayed and did a bit of fishing. While I was in the boat house, I saw a 4' long cotton mouth! I got out of there quick as lightning! I heard it slithering up into the foam floats a few minutes later.
My parents live on a cove in Ft. Smith on the Arkansas River (can't get enough water!) and their dog keep rooting snakes out of the lanscaped rocks. Some are harmless...others are not! She's pulled out black, garder, king, copperheads and cotton mouths. My dad shoots the poisonous ones with an old single action 22 pistol with ratshot shells. This year is the worst they seen it in the 15 years they've been on the river.

Re: Snakes Are Out!!
Well, this Saturday, I was checking out a farmstead on the Old River Trail at the Buffalo, and thinking this would be a good place to see snakes. I walked onto the front porch of an old house, up towards the front door, and I was greeted by a huge blacksnake, in just the perfect position in the doorway with his head raised. I didn't go through the door.
Hopefully, he got that big eating young copperheads.

Copperheads are a wonder of nature...their camo pattern blends in perfectly with the tones and shapes of an oak-hickory forest, and I even have a hard time seeing them on the asphalt in time to respond.

Re: Snakes Are Out!!
I saw this bad boy yesterday on my hike, and I just walked around him. I DO NOT like snakes of any kind, but he looks like a King snake to me, so that eased me up a bit. I also saw a 4" ring neck, hadn't seen one of those on a long time.

Hey Preacha looks like he would blend with a blunt end of a stick pretty well... and I am not trying to be funny.. I hate these things.

Re: Snakes Are Out!!
I hiked the Shores Lake Loop today and thought I'd add to the tally of snakes seen.
1 water moccasin
1 3 ft. Timber Rattler - 9 rattles with a black tail. Must have recently eaten. Was not aggressive at all, even when I picked him up with my trekking poles to move him off the trail.
Just a little worried about all of those snakes that I didn't see.
