I've been checking out Tim Ernst's Buffalo River Hiking Trails book and I would like to see Hemmed in Hollow, but can't decide how I want to hike there. I've been reading about the Centerpoint and Compton trail heads and cant make up my mind which trail I want to do. If I do the Compton trail loop I will enter Hemmed in Hollow on the trail closest to it and loop back around Sneed's creek and return on the horse trail. The Centerpoint trail looks to be a little bit easier, but it has a few extra miles on it. Does anyone have any experience on these trails or another suggestion for a weekend trip?

glock:
Some people will base camp at Kyle's Landing and day hike up to Hemmed-In-Hollow, using the Old River Trail. It's a pretty easy hike, since the trail follows the River, for the most part.
Just something else to think about.

Also depending on when you do it.. wet session usually means you cant cross the river. I personally like the Centerpoint trail.. but then I am the type to simply spend a couple of days in the hollow and camp out there.... Centepoint has the added benifet of the goat trail as well. Just a thought but I have seen Sneeds Creek at almost impassable as well. Just depends on when you go. I am planning on being up that way in the next few weeks myself... Maybe as late as the last weekend in Oct. You, and anyone else for that matter, are welcome to join me. Though I prob. will just car camp at either Ozark or Erbie.

Thanks for the feedback. I like the Kyle's Landing idea, how are the river crossings this time of the year?

I have hiked down the Center Point trail head. The Goat Trail is worth the few extra miles. The easiest way to see the falls is from the river when you float it or hike from Kyles. The bad thing about Kyles is if the falls are worth hiking to the river is probably to high to cross. To check the river levels http://waterdata.usgs.gov/ar/nwis/uv/?site_no=07055660&PARAmeter_cd=00065,00060 this link should provide what you need. It looks low now just depends on when your going.

I went the Centerpoint route, with a side trip on the goat trail to big bluff. Definately worth checking out. The centerpoint route is very easy going to the falls as it is mostly down hill, on the way back though it is 5.5 miles almost all up hill, good workout for those legs.
It also passes an old farmstead which is another + on that route. Depending on what shape your in it can be done in just a few hours, next time I am going to camp on big bluff in the little alcoves worn out in the side of the bluff, an amazing spot with an amazing view.
