South Colony Lakes Empty South Colony Lakes

Post by snowsurfer1973 Wed Sep 24, 2008 2:51 pm

Hi y'all,

Miss me, don't answer that. Well it has been awhile since I have posted here but I have been spending my hot, buggy, snake infested summer in the wild, and it has been a blast. I ended my summer with a glorious trip to South Colony lakes in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in south central Colorado. The trip was as expected one I will never forget, and will go down as one of a lifetime. The mountains were big and very steep and jagged and the hikes up them were full of adrenaline and excitement. A true test of ones gusto.
We basecamped at lower lake with an elevation close to twelve thousand feet. The view from our campsite was unbelievable. I think we had the best spot in the area. You could see Crestone peak, Crestone needle, Humboldt peak, Milwaukee peak and Broken Hand Peak all from our campsite. All reaching over 14,000ft., and was a close access point to all of these summit approaches. The climbs were again very tuff and rocky from class III to class IV climbs.
The weather was great the first two days with day time temps at 60-65, and nightime temps 30-35. The third and fourth day got hit with alot of sleet and snow in the afternoon and evening but was always clear in the morning and mid-day.
It was truly an amazing place and already am planning to go back next year with a larger group. You can see my pics in the gallery, hope you enjoy. Happy trails. i am sure you are all ready for the cool temps so you can get your butts out there and escape for awhile.

Welcome back snow. I was just checking out your pictures; they're great. They make me glad that fall is here. I'm ready for those 60-65 degree days and 30 degree nights!

Glad to see you've been spending time in the wild. I've spent my whole summer remodeling and stuff around my house. Yuck.
